The pirate Henry Every (after Angus McBride)
11 x 11 inches
Pencil and conté on paper
I recently finished a large, five-person portrait commission which I'll be able to post up later next week. I needed a break away from the paints before starting on the next project, so I spent some time indulging in my favourite diversion of browsing through my art books in search of renewed inspiration.
Warriors And Warlords - The Art Of Angus McBride is always among the first books I reach for, and I can highly recommend it to anyone, especially if you're interested in historical illustration. I've mentioned my love and admiration for McBride's work before, and previously did a couple of sketches of characters from his paintings (see earlier post). This follow-up drawing is another vignette, this time from the brilliant painting Angus McBride did for Osprey Publishing to illustrate the exploits of the pirate Henry Every.
I haven't done much drawing on toned paper before, nor have I really experimented with mixing pencil, conte and chalk etc. I love the way it looks though, so have definitely been inspired to do more drawings like this.
