Here's another illustration inspired by my visit to Dumbarton Castle last month. One of the re-enactors who played the part of the Covenanter captain was dressed pretty much as you see here (although he himself didn't look like this). By virtue of his status, a captain was free to choose whatever clothes and equipment he wanted to wear, and invariably dressed to impress, so to speak. This man wears riding boots, for example, not because he needs boots for riding, but because he wants to show he can afford to buy them!
