I wanted to take a break from my usual portrait work and do something a bit different. This a small, quick study I did of J M W Turner's 'Dutch Boats In A Gale' (also known as 'The Bridgewater Sea Piece' after the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater who commissioned the painting). It was painted in 1801 and is now on loan to The National Gallery in London.
The original is a whopping 64 x 87 inches compared to my 5 x 7 inch study. As you can imagine, I didn't make any attempt to details here. Instead, the study was all about observing the composition and light and trying to capture something of the overall drama of Turner's original as Dutch sail boats threaten to collide in the stormy sea.
