10 x 12 inches
Oil on canvas
(commissioned work)
This is the second of two double portraits I was commissioned to paint last month. As with the previous one, the reference for both portraits was taken from the same photo although in this case the figure in the background was a bit further away so I had to enlarge his image slightly so that the two portraits in the actual painting were of similar size rather than having the younger man in the background appear too distant. It wasn't a problem to do this, but it is a good reminder that you need to be cautious when painting from photos. It's important to study the reference and determine what to adjust and what to leave out. The reference should inform the painting but never dictate your decisions, especially when it comes to colour and composition.
