It's on to thumbnails 2 and 3 for my current commission. After some feedback from the client the figure has become a flamenco dancer, the pose more suitably energetic, and (in the case of number 3) the wine glass and smoke pushed to the background. Of these two, I much prefer the first one with it's more dramatic lighting. I'm also concerned that having the wine bottle and glass in the other one is too distracting. The object were only supposed to be an extra bit of detail as suggested in the brief, but they perhaps command too much attention because of the overall composition and the fact that they connect with the figure's eye-line. Either way, the client's opinion will help decide it, so we'll see. This is what doing the colour roughs is all about though - a chance to figure out what works and what doesn't and to make sure the final painting is going to be close to what the person making the commission has in mind.
