Another cycling painting and probably my personal favourite so far. A real pleasure to paint.
This is Laurent Fignon, a French cyclist who won the Tour de France in 1983 and 1984, and narrowly (and famously) missed out winning it a third time in 1989 when he lost to the American Greg LeMond by just 8 seconds, the smallest ever margin of victory in the Tour's history.
Fignon retired in 1993 and sadly died in 2010 after battling cancer for more than a year. During his career he always stood out in the peleton because of his ponytailed hair and circular glasses. It was those glasses, together with his college background and tactical skills as a bike racer that earned him the nickname 'The Professor'.
